About Sonia
|
Sonia was born and grew up in Egypt. She came to the United States in 1963 to do
graduate work in Hotel Administration and Tourism Marketing. After graduating from
Cornell University with a B.Sc. and an M.A., she had a 25 year career in Hotel Management,
Tourism Marketing and International Tourism Development.
In the latter years of her business career she was a consultant to the United Nations,
World Bank, and World Tourism Organization advising foreign governments in the use
of tourism as a means of economic development. At that time she cultivated her interest
in art. She studied watercolor painting with a number of leading artists in the
United States, and participated in a number of international watercolor workshops
in France, Greece and Mexico.
In the past 25 years Sonia changed careers and became a professional watercolor
artist. Her paintings have the spontaneity of impressionism. The subjects of her
painting include flowers, figures and landscapes. Her paintings have been juried
into a number of regional and national art shows, and have received a number of
awards including “Best Watercolor”. Her artwork has been exhibited in a number of
galleries and venues in Annapolis, Frederick, Ellicott City, New Windsor, and Baltimore,
Maryland.
Sonia is the founder of a regional art studio tour in central Maryland, and has
hosted many visitors to her studio during the years she lived in Maryland. Over
a thousand of her watercolors have been acquired by collectors living in 30 U.S.
states, France, China, Holland, Switzerland, Germany, England, Scotland, Whales,
Puerto Rico, Mexico, Canada and Egypt.
Sonia enjoys sharing her love for watercolors. She has taught painting classes for
the last ten years at a number of Retirement Communities and at seasonal second
home communities. Her students included beginners and accomplished artists.
She travels the world with her sketch book capturing the many sites she visits.
In between her travels she accepts watercolor commissions through her website.
Sonia and her husband Jim have made their home in Florida. Her studio is located
along the Gulf Coast in Estero, Florida.
